the brief
The kitchen worked, but it worked in pieces. Cabinets ran the perimeter, the cooking zone sat off on its own, and there was nowhere for anyone to sit while dinner was being made.
The homeowners wanted a single working island — somewhere to prep, eat and gather — which meant the plumbing and electrical had to move before anything else could happen.
what we did
The build ran in the right order, and the mid-project photos show it: perimeter cabinets and appliances went in first, then the island footprint was chalked and taped across the open subfloor while the supply and drain lines were roughed in underneath. Only once that was signed off did the flooring go down.
The perimeter carries white raised-panel cabinetry with a full-height custom hood surround over the range, a stacked double wall oven, and glass-front uppers at the end of the run. Undercabinet lighting washes the counter. A built-in desk and cabinet bay tucks into the corner.
The island itself is the centrepiece: a long stone top with seating for five, positioned so whoever is cooking still faces the room and the bay window breakfast area beyond. Hardwood runs continuously through the kitchen and out to the adjoining rooms, so the main level reads as one space rather than three.
The Result
A kitchen with a genuine centre of gravity.
The island took the prep work off the perimeter and gave the family five seats where there had been none, and the continuous hardwood pulled the breakfast area, the kitchen and the stair landing into one open main level.
