Project Overview

The Client's Challenge
This Alexandria homeowner came to Vale Construction ready for a real change. The existing bathroom had served its purpose for years, but it had fallen well behind - an outdated layout, a cramped shower enclosure, and a design that felt more like a builder-grade afterthought than a space worth spending time in.
Storage was limited. Lighting was dim and uninspiring. The old tile looked worn, and the dated fixtures made the entire room feel smaller than it actually was. The homeowner wanted something that felt intentional - a bathroom that matched the quality of the rest of their home rather than lagging behind it.
They came with a clear goal but no design plan. Vale handled both. From selecting the tile and fixture finishes to mapping out the shower layout and lighting design, we drove the entire renovation - design included. For a project like this, that kind of full-service approach matters. Decision fatigue is real when you're picking grout colors and shower valves simultaneously, and having a contractor who can guide those choices (rather than just install whatever you hand them) makes a measurable difference in the final result.

The Renovation Process
Vale Construction managed this project from demolition through final walkthrough. The existing bathroom was stripped entirely - old tile, outdated fixtures, and the original shower enclosure all came out to give the team a clean starting point.
Plumbing was reconfigured to support the new walk-in shower layout, including proper waterproofing of the shower floor and walls before any tile work began. Getting that substrate right - cement board, membrane, proper slope toward the drain - is the kind of thing that doesn't show in photos but determines whether a shower looks good for two years or twenty.
Tile installation was the centerpiece of the transformation. Large-format marble-look porcelain went floor-to-ceiling on the shower walls, creating a seamless, spa-like effect. The veining pattern required careful layout planning to ensure the tile felt deliberate rather than random. Wood-look porcelain tile was used on the bathroom floor, running continuously into the shower to visually expand the space - a design choice that makes the room feel significantly larger than the square footage suggests.
The frameless glass panel was installed to define the shower zone without closing it off. Combined with the linear drain running along the back wall, the result is a clean, open-plan shower that feels high-end without being fussy.
Lighting was redesigned throughout - recessed lighting inside the shower, a new vanity light bar over the medicine cabinet, and general lighting updated to complement the cooler wall tone. The floating walnut vanity and one-piece toilet were installed as final fixtures, pulling the whole design together.
